McGill Association of Mechanical Engineers

The McGill Association of Mechanical Engineers (MAME) is the undergraduate student society of McGill's Department of Mechanical Engineering. Founded in 1944, it represents over 700 students and exists to build a welcoming, well rounded departmental community through academic, professional and social events held throughout the year. MAME works closely with the Engineering Undergraduate Society to make sure mechanical students have access to the resources that let them succeed in all three.

The MAME lounge is in McConnell Engineering, room MC120. Everyone in mech eng is welcome, whether or not you know anyone on council.

Social Events

Mentorship Program

MAME's mentorship program pairs students across years, with a handful of events across the year rather than a single sign-up. Past editions have included a treasure hunt and a mentorship mixer. If you are new to the department and want one person to ask stupid questions to, this is the thing to sign up for.

Bluesy Brunch

Every semester, the MAME Social Committee hosts a bluesy brunch in the EUS Common Room before Blues Pub. All-you-can-eat pancakes and bottomless coffee, plus waffles, hash browns and tea. We make Blues a whole day thing, and you really oughta participate.

MAME Banquets

Held at the end of each semester, MAME's banquets are an event not to miss. Students join their fellow mechies at a restaurant to celebrate the end of the semester and the end of our sleep before exams start. There's a holiday banquet in the Fall and an end of year banquet in the Winter, with professors invited to the Winter one.

MAME 3-Man

Nobody really knows how 3-Man works. Nobody really knows what it is. But everyone knows what it means. Chaos. Excess. Revelry. It's a rite of passage for Mechies. Never attend it with 3 men.

3-Man now runs twice a year, once each semester. Teams are deliberately mixed so that you end up with people you don't already know. Event bursaries are available through the Equity & Mental Health Rep if the ticket price is a barrier: applications are confidential and no one on council sees who applied.

Social Committee Events

The Social Committee runs something most weeks. Recent editions have included a Smash tournament league running all semester, a 3v3 hockey tournament, rage room, trivia nights, karaoke nights, movie nights, and the St Patrick's Day crawl. MIVIL WAR is our exhibition match against the Civil Engineering students, most recently a laser tag showdown on Sainte-Catherine.

E-Week

MAME fields a team for the EUS Engineering Week competition every fall, with captains recruited early November and a hype night before the week starts. MECH is currently the reigning eweek champions after the 2026 Edition! Can we get the trophy two years in a row? 🏆

Office Hours

MAME office hours run every semester in the lounge. Drop by to study, ask questions about courses or getting involved, or just hang out with other mechies. This is the easiest way to meet council if you don't know anyone yet.

MAME sometimes hosts events in the lounge where we play board games, do arts and crafts or simply take a coffee all together

MAME Merch Sale

Showing off McGill Mechanical Engineering pride counts as a social activity. Hoodies, crewnecks, sweatpants, tanks, hats, scarves and patches drop at least once per semester, ordered online and picked up in the lounge.

Academic Events

CAD Madness

CAD Madness is a weekend long design competition organized by MAME. In teams of 2 to 4, students get a set number of hours to solve a design problem presented at the start of the weekend, then present their CAD drawings and solution to a panel of judges. The top 3 teams win cash prizes, and the competition is open to students from all faculties.

Prof High Tea

Mechanical engineering professors give short presentations on their research while enjoying free food and drinks. Afterward, stick around to chat, network, and learn more about the exciting work happening in our department!

Academic Forum

Held every semester, the Academic Forum is where questions and concerns about courses, or about the mechanical engineering curriculum in general, get relayed directly to the department. The department chair and MAME Council both attend. A feedback form circulates beforehand so that concerns can be raised anonymously, and there's free food.

The Fishbowl, The Forge and Tinkers

MAME runs the department's student-operated making spaces. The Fishbowl handles 3D printing and is staffed by student technicians recruited each fall. The Forge covers machining. Together with the Material Library and machining training, they sit under the Tinkers committee. These are the most direct way to get hands on equipment outside of class, and technician positions are open to apply for.

Professional Events

MECH Madness

MAME's year kicks off with MECH Madness, an annual multi-day industry tour in a different Canadian city every year. Three days of company tours, with the evenings spent sightseeing and meeting the city's local engineering students. It's the best way to see what a mech eng degree leads to across Canada while getting to know your peers.

MECH Madness went to Québec City in 2025 and heads to Kingston, Ontario in September 2026. Past editions have also visited Ottawa and Sherbrooke.

Wine and Cheese

Held once per semester, Wine and Cheese brings company representatives into the room in a setting built for actual conversation rather than a handshake and a business card. Run by the Outreach Committee.

Networking Pub Nights

Smaller, lower-pressure evenings hosted with a single company, with drinks included and free registration. Recent editions have been held with ISAAC Operations. Capacity is limited and spots go first come, first served.

Internship Panels

Run with the Engineering Career Centre, these panels put mechanical students who have done internships in front of those who haven't yet, to talk about how they actually got the job.

Council

The MAME Council is elected each spring and runs the association for the year. Its members split the work across three areas, academic, professional and social, under a President, eight vice-presidents, an Equity & Mental Health Coordinator, a Sustainability Representative, and one representative for each year of the program. The VP Administration and the U0 and U1 Representatives are elected in September, once the new cohort arrives.

Committees

Committees are how most people get involved with MAME without running for council. Hiring rounds open in September, with a second round in January.

Social Committee (SoCo)

Runs the social calendar: movie nights, pancake breakfasts, Bluesy Brunch, sushi outings, exam snack days, gaming tournaments, poutine and apartment crawls, 3-Man and more. Led by the VP Events.

Outreach Committee

Organizes and runs the professional events, seeks sponsorship, and finds new ways of involving companies in MAME activities. The committee has a Chair, a Sponsors Coordinator and a Finances Director. Led by the VP Sponsorship, with the VP External.

First Year Council (FYC)

Made up of first year mechanical students (U0 or U1) who plan events for first year engineering students, led by two chairs. Past events include dodgeball tournaments, trivia nights, Beer Die tutorials and a BBQ. Similar to the Social Committee, but focused on building community among first years.

Tinkers

Oversees MAME's making spaces: machining training, The Fishbowl, The Forge and the Material Library. Chaired by a student, with the VP Academic acting as liaison to the department.

CAD Madness Committee

Runs the CAD Madness competition, from the design problem to the judging panel.

Past Events

These events are part of MAME's history and are not currently running. They're documented here so a future council can bring one back without starting from scratch. If you want to see one return, talk to the VP Sponsorship or the VP Academic.

Industry Dinner

MAME's award winning Industry Dinner matched students with industry professionals they had expressed interest in, in groups of 6 or 7. A three-course meal let students and company representatives interact in a comfortable setting, with each company presenting during the evening. Wine and Cheese and the networking pub nights now fill this role in a lighter format.

Speed Networking

Each table was hosted by an industry rep speaking with 6 to 8 students; when time was up, students rotated. Discussed for revival alongside an alumni high tea.

MECH Talks

A week-long event, with each day featuring professors and professionals sharing their journey in mechanical engineering.

Lab Tours

With the help of professors and graduate students, MAME hosted tours of the department's research labs, useful before applications opened for the SURE program.

Integral Bee

Ever noticed that Mechanical Engineers are kind of nerds? MAME's Integral Bee forced people to compete against each other solving math problems in a gladiatorial setting while everyone else screamed and applauded like Roman peasants. An iconic competition.

Becoming a Genius Tutorials

MAME sponsored workshops and tutorials on machining, software (MATLAB, Python, CAD/CAM), Arduino and electronics. Machining training now runs under the Tinkers committee.
