- "body": "[{\"type\": \"paragraph\", \"value\": \"<p>The <strong>Student's Society of McGill University</strong> or\\r\\n<strong>SSMU</strong> for short is the student union for all McGill\\r\\nundergraduate students.</p>\\r\\n<h1 id=\\\"history\\\">History</h1>\\r\\n<p>SSMU was predated by the Alma Mater Society, which was in 1902-1903.\\r\\nThe Society, however, had little responsibility and resources. SSMU was\\r\\nfounded in 1908 by the McGill Debating Union. It was recognized as\\r\\nstudents' official representative body in the following year.</p>\\r\\n<p>McGill University began its existence with the Faculty of Medicine in\\r\\n1829 and the Faculty of Arts in 1843. However, not until the beginning\\r\\nof the 1900s was there an association on campus to provide\\r\\nrepresentation and social events for students. Before this time there\\r\\nwere no dances, no debating societies, and no government lobbying\\r\\norganizations. The demands for such an organization began to increase\\r\\nwith the growth of student-led activities at the turn of the\\r\\ncentury.</p>\\r\\n<p>In 1902-1903, the Alma Mater Society was born. Although it promoted\\r\\nactivities and some publications, the Society had little responsibility\\r\\nand even less money. It was in 1908 that the Students' Society of McGill\\r\\nUniversity was born. The following year, it was recognized as the single\\r\\nrepresentative body for students at McGill.</p>\\r\\n<p>The Society was first established in order to coordinate the\\r\\nundergraduate activities of the university. In the words of John T.\\r\\nHackett, the first President of the Students' Society: \\\"Like most new\\r\\nforms of Government its 'raison d'\\u00eatre' was found in abuses. The\\r\\nstudents had been brought into disrepute with the public. Their failure\\r\\nto meet their creditors in undergraduate enterprises, and their apparent\\r\\nacquiescence in the charges of vandalism which were periodically brought\\r\\nagainst them, rendered absolute the necessity of reform.\\\" The solution\\r\\nwas the Students' Society and its executive body, the Students'\\r\\nExecutive Council.</p>\\r\\n<p>Although McGill University began to admit its first female students\\r\\nin 1884, women were not members of the SSMU until 1931. They had a\\r\\nparallel organization called the Women's Union. In 1965, SSMU had its\\r\\nfirst female president; Sharon Sholzberg.</p>\\r\\n<p>Following the founding congress of UGEQ in November 1964, the SSMU\\r\\nexecutive voted to leave the Canadian Union of Students and join UGEQ in\\r\\nlate 1965. Two referendums to join UGEQ were defeated over the 1965-66\\r\\nuniversity year. In early 1967, SSMU finally joined UGEQ in a successful\\r\\nreferendum. The move was deemed controversial among some English\\r\\nCanadians who saw UGEQ as a radical, separatist student union. The\\r\\n1966-67 CUS President, Doug Ward, encouraged McGill students to join\\r\\nUGEQ since CUS no longer had any other members in Quebec.</p>\\r\\n<p>The SSMU grew and evolved after its inception. Its role expanded to\\r\\ninclude several clubs, to offer services, and to care for the University\\r\\nCentre (consisting at the time of a pub and a cafeteria). As enrollment\\r\\nincreased throughout the century, so did students' demands. The\\r\\nassociation took steps to ensure its effectiveness. This included\\r\\nenlarging its Executive Council and creating new positions for students.\\r\\nAs social issues on campus became more important and more complex, the\\r\\nSSMU demanded the right to represent students to the university\\r\\nadministration. After many student protests, it finally got the\\r\\nopportunity to do so in 1968, by obtaining seats on the Board of\\r\\nGovernors and the Senate.</p>\\r\\n<h1 id=\\\"what_does_ssmu_do\\\">What Does SSMU Do?</h1>\\r\\n<p>SSMU's general goal is to speak out and advocate for the the\\r\\ninterests of McGill undergrads. On the local university levels, SSMU\\r\\nrepresents students to the McGill administration. They work hard for\\r\\nfairer academic justice processes, better quality instruction, and\\r\\nbetter services for students. On the broader level, SSMU strongly\\r\\nadvocates for accessible quality public education. They were founded in\\r\\n1908 and are currently located in the William Shatner Building</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"ssmu_funds\\\">SSMU Funds</h3>\\r\\n<p>SSMU has a wide variety of funds available to students or EUS groups.\\r\\nA few examples include travel funds to attend conferences of\\r\\ncompetitions, sustainability funds and funds for first year student out\\r\\nreach. For a complete list of funds see <a href=\\\"SSMU_Funds\\\"\\r\\nclass=\\\"wikilink\\\" title=\\\"SSMU Funds\\\">SSMU Funds</a>.</p>\\r\\n<h1 id=\\\"representation\\\">Representation</h1>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"ssmu_legislative_council\\\">SSMU Legislative Council</h3>\\r\\n<p>The EUS is represented to SSMU through their legislative council. Two\\r\\n<a href=\\\"SSMU_Rep\\\" class=\\\"wikilink\\\" title=\\\"SSMU Reps\\\">SSMU Reps</a>,\\r\\nelected by engineering undergraduate, sit on both <a href=\\\"Council\\\"\\r\\nclass=\\\"wikilink\\\" title=\\\"EUS Council\\\">EUS Council</a> and <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"https://ssmu.ca/governance/ssmu-legislative-council/\\\">SSMU\\r\\nLegislative Council</a>. They advocate the interests of engineering\\r\\nstudents while legislating at the SSMU level.</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"the_mcgill_senate\\\">The McGill Senate</h3>\\r\\n<p>EUS is represented to the the McGill administration through the <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"Engineering_Senator\\\" class=\\\"wikilink\\\"\\r\\ntitle=\\\"Engineering Senator\\\">Engineering Senator</a>. The Engineering\\r\\nSenator is part of the SSMU Caucus which is a group of all the senators\\r\\nthat represent faculties.
