This refers to a campaign started by the <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"http://ssmu.ca\\\">SSMU</a> (the source of this content), educating\\r\\nstudents on how to traverse what you are academically entitled to.\\r\\nSometimes profs may violate one of your rights without knowing, and\\r\\nunfortunately <em>McGill places the onus on the students</em> to address\\r\\nviolations; make sure to inform yourself!</p>\\r\\n<p>If you believe you're academic rights have been violated, <strong><a href=\\\"#Addressing_Violations\\\">find out who to\\r\\ncontact</a></strong>.</p>\\r\\n<p><strong>TL;DR</strong> There's no way to really condense it further,\\r\\njust <code>CTRL+F</code></p>\\r\\n<h1 id=\\\"course_syllabi\\\">Course Syllabi</h1>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"content\\\">Content</h3>\\r\\n<p>Course outlines <strong>must include:</strong></p>\\r\\n<p>:*access information for the instructor (office hours, location &amp;\\r\\nphone number)</p>\\r\\n<ul><li>topics to be addressed in the course</li></ul>\\r\\n<p>:*required texts, recommended texts &amp; any additional\\r\\nmaterials</p>\\r\\n<ul><li>number, nature and forms of assessment</li></ul>\\r\\n<ul><li>weighting of each assessment</li></ul>\\r\\n<ul><li>any course pre-requisites</li></ul>\\r\\n<ul><li>the University\\u2019s academic integrity policy</li></ul>\\r\\n<ul><li>the right to submit written work in English or French</li></ul>\\r\\n<ul><li>penalties for late submitted assignment</li></ul>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"distribution\\\">Distribution</h3>\\r\\n<p>Instructors are <em>required</em> to distribute a course syllabus\\r\\nduring the first week of class (Article 3.2.1)</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"changes\\\">Changes</h3>\\r\\n<p>Contrary to popular belief, there are no regulations regarding\\r\\nchanges to course syllabi at McGill. In fact, the University retains the\\r\\npower to change evaluation schemes in the event of any \\u201cextraordinary\\r\\ncircumstances\\u201d outside of their control (Article 3.2.3).</p>\\r\\n<h1 id=\\\"assessments\\\">Assessments</h1>\\r\\n<p>According to the <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"https://studentrights.ssmu.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/2016-04_student_assessment_policy.pdf\\\">University\\r\\nStudent Assessment Policy</a>:</p>\\r\\n<p>:*<em>\\\"Assessment\\\" entails any student activity in a Course for which\\r\\na grade is granted (2.1.1)</em></p>\\r\\n<p>:*<em>Evaluations should be fair, reasonable &amp; reflect the\\r\\ncontent of a Course (3.1.1)</em></p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"scheduling\\\">Scheduling</h3>\\r\\n<p>Students registering for courses during the <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"https://www.mcgill.ca/importantdates/key-dates\\\">Add/Drop\\r\\nperiod</a> shall not be penalized for missed assessments which were due\\r\\nduring the course change period, including for class attendance (Article\\r\\n3.1.5). For full-year courses, only the September Add/Drop period\\r\\napplies.</p>\\r\\n<p>Labs, tutorials, conferences, and other assessments scheduled outside\\r\\nof lecture time should be scheduled by the end of the <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"https://www.mcgill.ca/importantdates/key-dates\\\">Add-Drop\\r\\nperiod</a> (3.2.4).</p>\\r\\n<p>Typically, midterms or assessments <strong>worth more than\\r\\n10%</strong> held outside of regular class time should not be scheduled\\r\\nduring the last 14 calendar days of a course.</p>\\r\\n<p>This does not include:</p>\\r\\n<p>:*Regular Assessments worth less than 10% of your grade (e.g.\\r\\nquizzes, reading responses)</p>\\r\\n<ul><li>An oral examination in a language class</li></ul>\\r\\n<ul><li>Most paper assignments (7.1.2)</li></ul>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"midterm_conflicts\\\">Midterm Conflicts</h3>\\r\\n<p>Midterms are defined by McGill as \\u201cIn-Term Examinations,\\u201d or exams\\r\\nscheduled outside of the Official Examination Periods in December and\\r\\nApril, <strong><em>but also outside of regular course\\r\\nhours</em></strong>. Under McGill policy, exams held during regularly\\r\\nscheduled class time do not technically count as \\u201cMidterms\\u201d (University\\r\\nStudent Assessment Policy, Article 7.1).</p>\\r\\n<p>As a result, \\u201cMidterm conflicts\\u201d exist when two in-term Examinations\\r\\nare scheduled at the same time <strong>outside of class</strong>, or an\\r\\nin-term Examination is scheduled outside of class at the same time as a\\r\\ndifferent class. In these circumstances, students are permitted to write\\r\\na <a href=\\\"#Exam_Deferrals\\\">Deferred Examination(s)</a>. However,\\r\\nthe instructors of each class should consult in order to mutually\\r\\ndetermine who shall offer the make-up examination. If a mutual decision\\r\\nis not possible, the regulations on exam conflicts from the student\\u2019s\\r\\nhome Faculty will apply (Article 7.1.5).</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"grade_breakdowns\\\">Grade Breakdowns</h3>\\r\\n<ul>\\r\\n<li>There should be more than one assessment for each course\\r\\n(3.1.4)</li>\\r\\n</ul>\\r\\n<p>:*<em>Exceptions include clinical evaluations in the Faculty of\\r\\nMedicine and requirements for grandfathered sessional lecturers in the\\r\\nFaculty of Law.</em></p>\\r\\n<ul>\\r\\n<li>If a participation grade will be worth more than 10%, a clear rubric\\r\\nmust be provided outlining evaluation criteria (3.1.6)</li>\\r\\n<li>Final exams should not be worth more than 75% of the grade, unless\\r\\nthe student is given a legitimate choice (6.1.3)</li>\\r\\n</ul>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"reviewing_grades\\\">Reviewing Grades</h3>\\r\\n<p>Every student has the right to be informed upon request of their\\r\\nstanding or performance in the Course while it is being taught (<a href=\\\"Charter_of_Students&#39;_Rights#PART_III:_Academic_Rights\\\">Charter of Student\\r\\nRights</a>).</p>\\r\\n<p>Every student has a right to consult any written Assessment for which\\r\\nthey have received a mark, and to receive an explanation of their grade\\r\\nfrom the instructor (<a href=\\\"#Relevant_Policies\\\">University Student\\r\\nAssessment Policy</a>, 3.6.1). Final grades for Fall term courses should\\r\\nbe posted by <strong>the day before Winter term lectures begin</strong>,\\r\\nwhile grades for Winter term courses should be posted <strong>within two\\r\\nweeks of the exam date</strong>.</p>\\r\\n<p>In addition, students have a right to an impartial and competent\\r\\nreread of any written Assessment and, where warranted, a revision of the\\r\\ngrade received (3.7.1). Both guarantees are subject to \\u201creasonable\\u201d\\r\\nadministrative arrangements and time-frame. The administrative process\\r\\nfor most reassessments is regulated at the Faculty level.</p>\\r\\n<h1 id=\\\"final_exams\\\">Final Exams</h1>\\r\\n<p>Final exams are held during the Official Examination Periods in\\r\\nDecember and April. They should be worth at least 25%, <strong>but not\\r\\nmore than 75% of a total grade</strong> (University Student Assessment\\r\\nPolicy, 6.1.3).</p>\\r\\n<dl>\\r\\n<dt></dt>\\r\\n<dd>\\r\\n<dl>\\r\\n<dt></dt>\\r\\n<dd>\\r\\n<em>In the case of missed assignments or accommodations, students\\r\\n<strong>may elect to write a final worth more than 75%</strong>.\\r\\nHowever, they must also be given the choice of another assessment\\r\\n(6.1.3).</em>\\r\\n</dd>\\r\\n</dl>\\r\\n</dd>\\r\\n</dl>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"conflicts\\\">Conflicts</h3>\\r\\n<p>Final exams are held during the <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"https://www.mcgill.ca/importantdates/key-dates\\\">Official\\r\\nExamination Periods</a> in December and April, except in the Faculties\\r\\nof Medicine and Dentistry. More information on recognizing exam conflicts\\r\\ncan be <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"https://www.mcgill.ca/students/exams/dates/conflicts\\\">found\\r\\nhere</a>.</p>\\r\\n<p>Students who are experiencing conflicts should submit a <strong><a\\r\\nhref=\\\"https://www.mcgill.ca/students/exams/files/students.exams/finalexamconflictform.pdf\\\">Final\\r\\nExam Conflict Form</a></strong> within four (4) weeks of the start of\\r\\nthe exam period. Possible accommodation could\\r\\ninclude mid-term deferrals or dropping the midterm in favor of a higher\\r\\nweighted final.</li>\\r\\n</ul>\\r\\n<dl>\\r\\n<dt>What if I need an extension?</dt>\\r\\n\\r\\n</dl>\\r\\n<ul>\\r\\n<li>Even when instructors have restrictions or penalties around late\\r\\nassignments, some are understanding of extenuating circumstances. It may\\r\\nbe worth explaining your situation to the professor directly and working\\r\\ntogether to negotiate deadlines. Some may ask for supporting\\r\\ndocumentation.
