AUVs are categorized as unmanned underwater\\r vehicles (UUV), and are very similar to remotely operated underwater\\r vehicles (ROV), which are controlled and powered by an operator on the\\r surface. Both vehicle systems are deployed in environments that are\\r inhospitable and difficult to access by humans. Some applications\\r include: mapping and oceanography, research and data collection, crash\\r investigations like Air France Flight 447, and oil and gas pipeline\\r planning, inspection, and maintenance.</p>\\r <h3 id=\\\"competition\\\">Competition</h3>\\r <p>Every year, the McGill Robotics AUV Project competes at the\\r International RoboSub Competition organized and hosted by AUVSI and ONR\\r at the SSC Pacific TRANSDEC in San Diego, California. The competition\\r attracts student teams from both universities and high schools around\\r the world.
