This was the founding year for\\r\\nMcGill Concrete Canoe, and an impressive result for our first\\r\\nattempt.</tab></p>\\r\\n\", \"id\": \"6f58b1ba-bc0d-4ec5-af37-68ca4a71b7d4\"}, {\"type\": \"paragraph\", \"value\": \"<h2 id=\\\"competition\\\">Competition</h2>\\r\\n<p>Every year in May our team joins Concrete Canoe teams from all over\\r\\nCanada for a serious engineering challenge: teams present the hard work\\r\\nthey have done over the past year in hopes of winning at competition.\\r\\nThe competition itself is judged based on several components:\\r\\nAesthetics, Design paper and more help decide which team wins every\\r\\nyear. Most importantly, an open-water race determines the fastest team!\\r\\nStudents from over 18 Canadian universities share valuable experience\\r\\nand have tons of fun during a 3 day competition!</p>\\r\\n<h2 id=\\\"our_team\\\">Our Team</h2>\\r\\n<p>Sub-divided into 6 sub-teams there is more than 70 of us on the team:\\r\\neach sub-team takes on a separate research field or a specific task,\\r\\nthus allowing more in-depth work:</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"hull_design_structural_analysis\\\">Hull Design &amp; Structural\\r\\nAnalysis</h3>\\r\\n<p>Responsible for the design and optimization of the canoe hull. Each\\r\\nmember designs their own hull using AutoCAD, Excel, and DelftShip and\\r\\nthen, gets to 3D print their own canoe to complete physical testing.\\r\\nPhysical tests such parameters as stability, maneuverability and speed.\\r\\nThese results are utilized alongside Delftship modelling in order to\\r\\nselect the final design. The final hull design is analyzed under various\\r\\nloading conditions with a combination of hand calculations and MATLAB\\r\\nprogramming.<br />\\r\\n</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"mixing\\\">Mixing</h3>\\r\\n<p>Main goal is to determine a lightweight concrete mix design that will\\r\\nmeet: density, strength and aesthetic requirements while following\\r\\ncompetition Rules and Regulations. Research and testing are conducted\\r\\nalongside each other: new materials, their proportions as well as\\r\\ndifferent curing techniques are developed and tested throughout the year\\r\\nin order to design a winning mix. Everyone on the sub-team gets to learn\\r\\na lot of theory, various concrete design approaches and finally, get\\r\\ninto the laboratory to perform all the mixing and testing\\r\\nprocedures.<br />\\r\\n</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"aesthetics\\\">Aesthetics</h3>\\r\\n<p>Making a canoe made just out of concrete look as an eye-pleasing\\r\\npiece art is our job and it is not easy! Theme development, design of\\r\\nthe canoe's interior and exterior aesthetic elements, final product\\r\\ndisplay and a lot more tasks which involve both artistic and practical\\r\\napproach fall on the shoulders of aesthetics sub-team members.<br />\\r\\n</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"construction\\\">Construction</h3>\\r\\n<p>Turning structural drawings into reality is the mission of the\\r\\nconstruction sub-team. Design and construction of canoe molds,\\r\\ndeveloping canoe casting techniques as well as an actual canoe casting,\\r\\nsanding and finishing the surfaces are just some of the tasks. Since\\r\\n2016, our team converted to a wooden canoe mold, considerably reducing\\r\\nthe cost and carbon footprint of our team compared to the previous\\r\\nStyrofoam mold<br />\\r\\n</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"paddling\\\">Paddling</h3>\\r\\n<p>On-water practice weekends and weekly indoor paddling practices with\\r\\nqualified coaches for all sub-team members. Good vibes and good workout\\r\\nare guaranteed!<br />\\r\\n</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"business\\\">Business</h3>\\r\\n<p>Marketing, social media, photography, finances and almost everything\\r\\nnon-technical is done by the business team!<br />\\r\\n</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"academics\\\">Academics</h3>\\r\\n<p>An ultimate goal of academic sub-team activity is attaining a highest\\r\\nscore for a technical paper.
