+ "body": "[{\"type\": \"paragraph\", \"value\": \"<p>The <strong>Bioengineering Undergraduate Student Society\\r\\n(BUSS)</strong> is a student organization which serves to represent all\\r\\nundergraduate students in the <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"Engineering_Undergraduate_Society#Departmental_Societies\\\"\\r\\nclass=\\\"wikilink\\\" title=\\\"Department\\\">Department</a> of Bioengineering at\\r\\nMcGill University. BUSS is dedicated to providing academic and social\\r\\nopportunities to inspire, entertain, and guide its members through their\\r\\nundergraduate degree.</p>\\r\\n<h2 id=\\\"history\\\">History</h2>\\r\\n<p>After the official formation of McGill's Undergraduate Department of\\r\\nBioengineering in the 2016-2017 academic year, the first cohort of\\r\\nbioengineering undergraduate students collaborated with McGill's\\r\\nChemical Engineering Student Society (ChESS) to integrate their\\r\\ndepartment within the Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS). BUSS was\\r\\nformally established in January 2017, after a unanimous vote by the EUS\\r\\nCouncil to recognize BUSS as an official student society under the EUS.\\r\\nThe first ever BUSS Executive Committee was elected in February\\r\\n2017.</p>\\r\\n<h2 id=\\\"events\\\">Events</h2>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"social_events\\\">Social Events</h3>\\r\\n<figure>\\r\\n<img src=\\\"Undergraduate_Students.jpg\\\"\\r\\ntitle=\\\"261 px|alt=The first cohort of bioengineering undergraduate students in front of McGill&#39;s Wong Building in the Fall of 2016.|The first cohort of bioengineering undergraduate students at McGill.\\\" />\\r\\n<figcaption>261 px|alt=The first cohort of bioengineering undergraduate\\r\\nstudents in front of McGill's Wong Building in the Fall of 2016.|The\\r\\nfirst cohort of bioengineering undergraduate students at\\r\\nMcGill.</figcaption>\\r\\n</figure>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"potluck\\\">Potluck</h4>\\r\\n<p>At the start of every academic year, BUSS organizes a potluck as a\\r\\nway for returning students to catch up with peers and for incoming\\r\\nstudents to meet new friends. Usually taking place at an apartment,\\r\\nPotluck is an opportunity to have a wide variety of food, without having\\r\\nto cook all of it.</p>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"buss_blues\\\">BUSS Blues</h4>\\r\\n<p><a href=\\\"Blues_Pub\\\" class=\\\"wikilink\\\" title=\\\"Blues Pub\\\">Blues Pub</a>,\\r\\nthe Engineering student pub is hosted by a different society every week\\r\\nto fundraise. Twice a year, BUSS hosts the event, and was the winner of\\r\\nBlues Pub of the year in 2017-2018.</p>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"buss_clothing_sale\\\">BUSS Clothing Sale</h4>\\r\\n<p>Once in the fall and once in the winter, BUSS organizes a clothing\\r\\nsale for Bioengineering students to represent their department. The\\r\\ncatalogues are usually made available early in the semester and clothing\\r\\nusually arrives about a month later. As clothing is sold at cost, this\\r\\nis an affordable way to show school spirit.</p>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"buss_banquets\\\">BUSS Banquets</h4>\\r\\n<p>At the end of the Fall &amp; Winter semesters, BUSS organizes a\\r\\nbanquet at a local Montr\\u00e9al restaurant which is followed by an\\r\\nafter-party with all the other Engineering <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"Departmental_societies\\\" class=\\\"wikilink\\\"\\r\\ntitle=\\\"departments.\\\">departments.</a> A couple of profs are invited and\\r\\nattend, as well as departmental staff. Banquet is one of the only\\r\\nsemi-formal events, making it a great event for taking photos. The\\r\\nWinter banquet, usually in April, turns into a gala where awards\\r\\nrecognizing spirit and various accomplishments are handed out.</p>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"year_bonding_events\\\">Year Bonding Events</h4>\\r\\n<p>Each U-Rep will host various bonding events each semester\\r\\nspecifically for students in their given year. This is a great\\r\\nopportunity for students to get to know each other in their year and to\\r\\nde-stress from schoolwork. Such events include Board Game Nights, Wings\\r\\nNights, DIY Sundaes and more!</p>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"mental_wellness_events\\\">Mental Wellness Events</h4>\\r\\n<p>The Equity &amp; Mental Health Representative often will host various\\r\\nevents to help bioengineering relax during exam periods. These events\\r\\naim to promote positive mental health and give a chance for students to\\r\\ntake a break and de-stress.</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"professional_academic_events\\\">Professional &amp; Academic\\r\\nEvents</h3>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"buss_ride\\\">BUSS Ride</h4>\\r\\n<p>BUSS Ride is the name of our very own industry tour. The first ever\\r\\nBUSS Ride took place January 2019 in Toronto, where students toured a\\r\\nbiomedical technology company, attended a conference on innovation and\\r\\ninvention in surgery, and had the opportunity to explore the city. The\\r\\nfollowing edition took place in January 2020 in Quebec City. BUSS Ride\\r\\nwill be finally returning for its third edition January 19th-21st,\\r\\n2023!</p>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"bioengage\\\">BioEngage</h4>\\r\\n<p>Initially starting off as a speed-network event, BioEngage has turned\\r\\ninto a month-long event involving various presentations, workshops, lab\\r\\n&amp; company tours and fairs to get students involved in bioengineering\\r\\nand discover future career options.</p>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"research_seminars_lab_tours\\\">Research Seminars &amp; Lab\\r\\nTours</h4>\\r\\n<p>Working in conjunction with the Bioengineering Department and the\\r\\ngraduate Biological &amp; Biomedical Engineering Department, various\\r\\nresearch seminars occur during the year to highlight work being done by\\r\\nthe professors in their laboratories. Usually two professors will\\r\\npresent their research in a given seminar which helps expose students to\\r\\nthe various applications of bioengineering and allows them to have a\\r\\nfirst-hand look a future in academia. Lab tours are also featured and\\r\\nallow students to visit potential graduate school and SURE placements.\\r\\nThis is also a great time to conversate with professors!</p>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"academic_forum\\\">Academic Forum</h4>\\r\\n<p>Held once a semester, the <a href=\\\"Academic_Forum\\\" class=\\\"wikilink\\\"\\r\\ntitle=\\\"Academic Forum\\\">Academic Forum</a> allows students to communicate\\r\\nany academic questions and concerns directly to the department. This is\\r\\na great time to express any challenges you may be having with a course.\\r\\nThe department chair, head of undergraduate curriculum and BUSS Council\\r\\nmembers will all be in attendance for this event.</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"multi_department_events\\\">Multi-department Events</h3>\\r\\n<h4 id=\\\"apartment_crawls\\\">Apartment Crawls</h4>\\r\\n<p>Usually in conjunction with other small engineering departments such\\r\\nas <a href=\\\"Chemical_Engineering_Students&#39;_Society\\\" class=\\\"wikilink\\\"\\r\\ntitle=\\\"ChESS\\\">ChESS</a> and <a\\r\\nhref=\\\"Materials_Engineering_Undergraduate_Society\\\" class=\\\"wikilink\\\"\\r\\ntitle=\\\"MEUS\\\">MEUS</a>, BUSS hosts apartment crawls, where teams of\\r\\naround 10 people go around the Milton-Parc community, stopping at\\r\\nvarious apartments for food and drink.</p>\\r\\n<h2 id=\\\"initiatives\\\">Initiatives</h2>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"buss_bulletin\\\">BUSS Bulletin</h3>\\r\\n<p>Every week, the VP Communications creates a newsletter highlighting\\r\\nupcoming BUSS &amp; EUS events, as well any other opportunities that may\\r\\nbe of interest to Bioengineering students. At the end of the newsletter\\r\\nis the very special BUSSie of the Week! This weekly segment features a\\r\\nbioengineering student with a little blurb to get to know people within\\r\\nthe department! If you're not already receiving the newsletters, you can\\r\\ncontact the VP Communications (buss.vpcomm@mcgilleus.ca) to\\r\\nsubscribe!</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"buddy_program\\\">Buddy Program</h3>\\r\\n<p>The goal of the BUSS Buddy Program is to connect incoming students\\r\\nwith a current Bioengineering student to provide advice and act as a\\r\\nmentor. This is a great way for new students to feel comfortable at\\r\\nMcGill and ask any questions and receive guidance from an older\\r\\nstudent!</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"lounge_hunting\\\">Lounge Hunting</h3>\\r\\n<p>While BUSS may not have a lounge (yet), the hunt will never stop! Engagement, the\\r\\nFirst-Year Committee is a group U0 and U1 students that work together to\\r\\nhost events and create initiatives specifically for first-years. FYC\\r\\noften hosts two events per semester and work together to create a strong\\r\\nand welcoming community for newly admitted students! This is a great way\\r\\nfor first-year students to become involved.</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"academic_committee\\\">Academic Committee</h3>\\r\\n<p>Chaired by the Vice-President Academic, the Academic Committee\\r\\nconsists of students from all years that work to bridge the gap between\\r\\nstudents and the department. Their main goal is to communicate with\\r\\nbioengineering professors and administration, giving them feedback and\\r\\nsuggestions for courses. They also help to resolve any academic issues\\r\\nstudents may have with courses. The Academic Committee also works to\\r\\npromote the research occurring within bioengineering labs. They often\\r\\nwill host various workshops and seminars that help expose students to\\r\\nthe great work being done in academia and industry!</p>\\r\\n<h3 id=\\\"external_committee\\\">External Committee</h3>\\r\\n<p>Chaired by the Vice-President External, the External Committee\\r\\nconsists of students from all years that work to help connect fellow\\r\\nstudents with the Bioengineering industry. From planning networking\\r\\nevents and industry tours, to organizing speaker panels and industry\\r\\nworkshops, the External Committee helps promote industry exposure to\\r\\nBioengineering students in the department.</p>\\r\\n<h2 id=\\\"buss_feedback_form\\\">BUSS Feedback Form</h2>\\r\\n<p>Get in touch with BUSS!
