CodeJam is the largest hackathon held by ECSESS at McGill! The event is usually held yearly in November in Trottier building. In the past, CodeJam has attracted 300+ participants from universities across Canada. CodeJam is a great opportunity to network and develop participants’ hacking skills.

Some key features of CodeJam include:

• Techfair hosted by CodeJam, great for networking and landing an internship!
• Swag bag for every participant including cool merch
• A lot of prizes to win with many prize categories
• Snacks provided during the event
• Workshops before and during the event with sponsors for skill development

Organizing Committee

As of the 12th CodeJam, the president(s) of the organizing committee are chosen by the committee of the previous year and ECSESS’ VP Tech Dev. The president(s) then hold interviews to choose new members for the committee.

Past competitions

The theme of the event was human-computer interactions. The challenge given to participants was to build a tool similar to McGill's Visual Schedule Builder. The theme of the event was Bioinformatics. The participants were given diagnostics data of a number of patients for a specific disease. They had to develop and train an algorithm that would be able to predict if a particular patient had the disease. The theme of the event was DataDive. The participants chose between three categories, Transportation, Economics, and Sports. Each category was supplied with a variety of datasets that the participants were allowed to make anything with. The only limitation was that at least one of the datasets from the category was used. Each category was judged and the winner moved on to a final round against the other category winners. The theme of the event was Pattern Recognition. Participants created any project and submitted it to one of three categories: geospatial analysis, natural language processing, and computer vision. The top three submissions in each category received a prize with the best project in each category competing against each other for the overall ranking. The format of the competition was be open-ended with some subcategories that competitors may opt into to win prizes. The main 3 subcategories were Artificial Intelligence, Internet of things and Augmented Reality. Click here to see the winners. The theme of the event was Digital by Default. Participants created any project and submitted it to the general category, and optionally to the two sponsor prizes. One was by Samasource (Now Sama) and the other was by Matrox.
